Before You Buy a Water Filter, Start With Your ZIP Code

Clearhouse

Home water, made simple   /   Advertisement

Before you buy a water filter, start with your ZIP code.

The right system starts with understanding your water. Clearhouse helps you connect the dots—from your local report to a system that fits your home.

What’s in your local water report?

Free lookup. No email required. Local information where available.

It starts with something small. A taste you don’t love. Mineral spots you keep wiping off. Or a water report you’re not sure how to read.

Then you start shopping. Filters. Softeners. Different tank sizes. Long lists of claims. Before long, one simple goal—better water at home—becomes a complicated purchase.

There’s a clearer place to start: your water.

A bright home kitchen with a brass faucet and warm natural light
For the water you cook with, wash with, and use throughout your home.

A chlorine taste and hard-water scale are different problems. A system that helps with one may not solve the other. And the right equipment for one home may be the wrong size for the next.

Clearhouse brings the decision into focus: check local water information, tell us about your home, and see a starting recommendation with a clear explanation.

Step 01 · Understand your water

Your ZIP code is a starting point.

Enter your ZIP code, then confirm your water provider. Where information is available, Clearhouse brings together local water details so you can see what deserves a closer look.

Four questions worth askingWhat to look for in your report
HardnessCould mineral levels explain spots and scale?
DisinfectantDoes your utility use chlorine or chloramine?
PFASWhat testing results are available for your provider?
FluorideWhat is reported, and does it matter to your treatment goals?

A utility report describes the local supply, not a test of your own tap. Coverage varies; missing data does not mean a substance is absent. Confirm your provider and test your water before final treatment decisions.

Step 02 · Find your fit

A recommendation with a reason.

Next, tell us about your home: your water source, bathrooms, household size, existing equipment, and what you’d like to improve.

Those details help Clearhouse suggest a system and size—and explain the fit. Already have a working softener? That matters. Have a private well? You’ll need current testing and a separate treatment review.

Specific contaminant concerns, including PFAS or fluoride, need exact-model performance review. The base filter is not a promise to remove everything in a report. Fluoride reduction requires separate equipment.

Step 03 · Make a clear plan

Your system. Your plumber.

Choosing equipment is only part of the decision. Clearhouse gives you an equipment brief to share with a licensed plumber you choose.

  1. Confirm the fit.Your plumber checks flow, pressure, space, drainage, and the equipment requirements. Get a separate installation quote before ordering.
  2. Order your equipment online.Review the system, size, and any selected add-ons. Clearhouse includes free U.S. shipping on equipment.
  3. Arrange installation. You hire and pay your plumber. Schedule installation once delivery is confirmed, then follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.

The recommendation also makes room for what’s still unknown. That might mean confirming your hardness, checking a specific reduction claim, or getting a professional review before selecting equipment.

A few questions before you start.

Is the water lookup really free?

Yes. You can enter your ZIP code and review available local water information without providing your email address or buying a system. Some areas have limited information.

Does this test the water in my house?

No. The report uses available information about local water supplies. Your plumbing and conditions at your home can differ. Confirm your utility and use a home water test for final treatment decisions.

Do I automatically need a softener?

No. Start with your filtration goals, then consider softening based on hardness, scale concerns, and equipment you already own. A softener and a filter serve different purposes.

What if I have a private well?

Private wells need current laboratory testing and treatment matched to those results. Municipal reports cannot describe your well. Tell us that you use well water in the home-fit questions so you can follow the appropriate path.

Is plumber installation included?

No. Clearhouse sells the equipment; you choose, hire, and pay your licensed plumber. Confirm compatibility and get an installation quote before ordering. Labor, extra plumbing parts, and any site work are separate.

What maintenance should I plan for?

The whole-house manual recommends replacing sediment and carbon cartridges every 12–18 months, or sooner as conditions require. Tank media has a separate service life. A salt-based softener also needs salt and appropriate servicing.

What about warranty and returns?

Crystal Quest publishes a one-year limited warranty for qualifying defects, with conditions and exclusions. Its published return policy generally requires authorization and unused equipment in original packaging within 30 days of delivery. Approved refunds are subject to a 30% restocking fee and shipping deductions; return shipping is the customer’s responsibility. Exclusions apply, including custom orders and filter cartridges. Contact Clearhouse to confirm the terms for your order and arrange any return. Read the manufacturer’s full policy ↗
