The clear answer

What is the right well water filter?

The right well water filter matches your lab results and your home’s peak water use. An iron and sulfur filter targets confirmed iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide. If your well also has hard water, the complete system adds a salt-based softener and SMART filtration. Bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, tannins and high dissolved solids need separate assessment; no single filter treats every well.

Filter, softener, or both?

Filtration targets specific water-quality concerns. A salt-based softener removes calcium and magnesium hardness. Add the stages your water actually needs.

Water filtration

Match the media to the concern: dedicated iron treatment for a well, or SMART filtration for a broader set of water-quality needs. A filter does not automatically soften hard water.

Hardness removal

Ion-exchange resin removes hardness minerals. A separate brine tank restores the resin during regeneration; plan for salt, a drain and routine checks.

What about salt-free conditioning?

A salt-free conditioner manages scale while retaining hardness minerals. It does not produce softened water. The softener packages on this page use salt-based ion exchange.

The Complete Well Water System already includes softening. Choose the Iron & Sulfur Filter when that treatment is the priority and a separate softener is not required.

How it works

Follow the water.

Water in To your home

A cartridge captures suspended particles such as dirt and sand before they reach the main treatment tank.

Specialty media targets iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide. Automatic backwashing flushes the media; some water conditions require oxidation or additional treatment.

Ion-exchange resin replaces calcium and magnesium hardness ions with sodium. Salt in the separate brine tank regenerates the resin; brine is not the normal water path to your home.

A blend of filtration media treats a range of water-quality concerns through adsorption and redox processes. Match specific reduction needs to the exact manufacturer configuration.

The final carbon cartridge polishes the water for taste and odor. Replace it as conditions require; it is not a disinfection stage.

Treatment overview, not a plumbing diagram. Shows the base equipment only; selected add-ons require additional stages. Performance depends on water chemistry, flow and maintenance.

A little planning. A better fit.

Your well. Your test. Your treatment plan.

Use a current lab report before choosing a well-water system. EPA recommends annual testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids and pH, plus other contaminants of concern. Ask your local health department which additional tests fit your area.

EPA guidance on private-well testing

Before you choose a size

  • Confirm iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, hardness and pH, along with the safety tests your lab recommends.
  • Measure peak demand and confirm that the well pump can supply the required service and backwash flow.
  • Review pressure, drain access, power, space and a protected installation location with your plumber.
  • Flag bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, tannins or high dissolved solids for a separate treatment assessment.

Know the upkeep before you buy

Built to stay. Made to be serviced.

Cartridges, tank media and optional treatment stages have different service needs. Use the model’s manual and your water conditions to plan each one.

Typically 12–18 months

Refresh the cartridges

Change the sediment prefilter and carbon postfilter on the manual’s schedule, or sooner if flow or water conditions call for it.

If your system has a softener

Keep an eye on the salt

Check the brine tank regularly and replenish salt as directed. Hardness, water use and regeneration settings determine consumption.

Based on water and performance

Maintain the treatment media

Backwashing and regeneration do not make media last indefinitely. Have your installer assess the tank media and resin separately from the cartridges.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Well water filter FAQs.

Straight answers about choosing, sizing, installation and upkeep.

What is the best whole-house well water filter?

The best fit depends on a current water test and your household demand. Choose targeted iron and sulfur treatment for confirmed metals or hydrogen sulfide. The complete system adds softening and SMART filtration when hardness and broader filtration needs call for them. Other contaminants may require dedicated treatment.

How much does a well water filtration system cost?

Clearhouse’s stainless steel Iron & Sulfur Filter starts at $2,026.00. The Complete Well Water System starts at $5,204.00. Size changes the price. Free U.S. shipping is included; your plumber’s installation, site-specific parts and applicable taxes are separate.

Will an iron filter also soften my well water?

No. The Iron & Sulfur Filter does not include a softener. If a test confirms hard water and you want hardness reduction, the Complete Well Water System includes a salt-based softener and brine tank alongside iron treatment and SMART filtration.

Do these filters make bacteria-contaminated water safe?

Sediment and iron filters are not a substitute for disinfection. A UV stage needs suitable pretreatment, verified feed-water conditions and flow within its rating. If harmful contamination is found, follow your local health department’s advice while the source and treatment are addressed.

Should I choose Standard or Large?

Standard has 1.5 cubic feet of media per applicable treatment tank and a listed service flow of 9–11 GPM. Large has 2.0 cubic feet and 10–13 GPM. Your installer must also confirm measured contamination levels, peak demand, pressure and available backwash flow. A UV add-on has its own 12 GPM maximum.

Where is a well water filter installed?

Well-water treatment is generally placed after the pressure tank and before the water heater, with the final treatment order set by the model instructions. Have your plumber check drainage, power, bypass plumbing, service access and a suitable protected location before ordering.

What maintenance should I plan for?

Plan for cartridge changes, media service and automatic backwashing. The complete system also needs softener salt. If you add UV, follow its lamp and sleeve-care schedule. Use the manufacturer’s manual and actual water conditions to set service intervals.

Can a local ZIP-code water report replace a well test?

No. Public utility reports describe a utility’s water, not your private well. Test your well directly through a qualified laboratory. EPA recommends annual testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids and pH, with additional testing for local concerns or changes in conditions.
